KAY HUGHES

Trapped. Zapped. And Snapped Awake.

Six months. That’s how long I spent feeling distraught, upset, helpless, and utterly confused. No matter how hard I tried to escape those feelings, they seemed to pull me deeper into their grip. It was like being trapped in a cage wired with electricity—every attempt to rattle the bars zapped me, keeping me exactly where I was. Day after day. Week after week.

I was stuck.

You’ve probably heard the saying, “What you resist persists.”

Well, I lived it.

It wasn’t until my mentor said to me, “Kay, what feels worth moving toward?” I realized I’d been pouring so much energy into escaping what I didn’t want that I lost sight of what I did want. I wanted peace. I wanted to feel anchored in my values. I wanted to feel whole.

So, instead of fighting the feelings, I started moving toward what I truly desired. Slowly, I became more intentional about the choices I was making—both in what I did and how I thought.

So I began asking myself:

Does this action or choice nurture my sense of peace and well-being?
How can I reinterpret this situation to align with my values and bring me closer to wholeness?
Is this discomfort guiding me toward growth, or is it a signal to set a boundary or choose a different path?

It didn’t happen overnight. But that shift in focus made all the difference.

It was like I was finally snapped awake.

For the first time in a long time, I started to see possibilities instead of walls. I realized that being stuck wasn’t about the external circumstances. It was about the way I was thinking and responding to them. The cage I felt trapped in wasn’t as solid as it seemed; in fact, it was built from my own resistance.

By shifting my focus, I began to dismantle that cage piece by piece. I started to breathe a little easier. Decisions felt lighter. Even the small victories—a quiet moment of peace, a new way of seeing something familiar—became milestones worth celebrating.

If you’re feeling stuck right now, I hope this serves you as a gentle reminder: The way out isn’t always through resistance or an epic battle. It’s through moving toward what you want.

We can all begin where we are, with what we have, and take a step toward what we truly want. Because we are capable of so much more than where we’ve started.
